The Sui Dynasty Imperial Examinations

After Emperor Wen of Sui, Yang Jian, united the realm, he recognized the flaws of the old recommendation system and hereditary aristocracy. He boldly established the imperial examination system to select officials, opening a gateway to power and ambition for countless sons of humble families. History would remember it as the “Kaihuang Examinations.” The story centers on Luoyang, the eastern capital of the Sui dynasty. Sun Jieyu, the son of a merchant, rises above thousands of scholars with his extraordinary talent and becomes the first top scorer in the Sui imperial examinations, earning fame throughout the realm. He not only enters the Hanlin Academy but also wins Emperor Wen's favor, becoming a model for the new policies. Yet danger lurks behind the glory. Conservative aristocratic factions at court, represented by Li Yuan, Yuwen Huaji, and Wang Poluo, see the new examination elites as a thorn in their side. They stir up trouble both within and beyond the court, determined to strangle the fledgling system. Meanwhile, the first sparks of science are quietly kindled. Sun Jieyu and other ambitious minds, including Fan Yumeng, who passed the examinations disguised as a man, mathematical prodigy Meng Shuguang, and physics genius Qiu Dayan, advocate adding practical subjects such as mathematics and natural philosophy to the examinations, championing the idea that “technology can strengthen the nation.” Though they win a foothold before the emperor, they face fierce opposition from the vast bureaucracy, which treats Confucian classics as its unquestionable standard. Meng Shuguang's theories of infinity and Qiu Dayan's optical telescope are groundbreaking discoveries, yet they are dismissed as “clever but useless tricks” that offend the gods, provoking fear and suppression from the ruling class. Meanwhile, the immense wealth amassed by the Sun family through improved textile techniques and industrial ventures upends the old economic order, attracting the greed and false accusations of corrupt officials.
