Synopsis

Quietness and inaction are the foundation of Taoist self-cultivation. "Tai Shang Laojun Speaks of Chang Qingjing Jing" is an important Taoist classic. It is said to have been written by Taishang Laojun and the author is unknown. This sutra is short in length but profound in meaning. Taoist priests of all ages have regarded it as the fundamental method of cultivation. The whole sutra aims at "people can always be quiet, and heaven and earth will all return". It begins with: "The great road is invisible, giving birth to the heaven and earth; the great road is ruthless, moving the sun and the moon; the great road is nameless, nourishing all things." Through progressive elaboration, it reveals the way of "quietness" - stay away from delusional desires, clear your mind and keep few desires, and conform to the great road by keeping nothingness. The scripture points out that the reason why people cannot achieve enlightenment is because "the mind has many conditions and the environment has troubles." If you can always practice tranquility and get rid of desires and return to the true state, you can become one with heaven and earth, and finally reach the state of long-term vision and true harmony with the Tao. The "Eternal Peace Sutra" has simple language and is easy to understand. It is often used as morning and evening homework in Taoist temples. It is also one of the most widely circulated Taoist classics among the people. It is not only a must-read book for monks, but also a concentrated expression of the idea of purity and inaction in traditional Chinese culture.
