Wu Dalang Crosses the Sea: Japan’s Creation Legend

In the late Northern Song, in Yanggu County, Wu Zhi, better known as Wu Dalang, possesses peerless skill at making shaobing but is treated with contempt. After his wife Pan Jinlian and the local bully Ximen Qing frame him in a vicious plot, he is thrown into prison and left on the brink of death. A carefully planned fake death allows him to escape, but he must leave his homeland behind and set out on a perilous, uncertain voyage east, carrying the weight of injustice and hatred.

His extraordinary understanding of food and fermentation, his golden finger, lets him save his ship again and again from storms, hunger, and disease. He wins over the crew and earns, for the first time, a measure of respect. On the vast ocean, a mysterious sea chart and foreign notes left by his father point the way, while concealing the mystery of his own origins.

After weathering countless trials, he sets foot on the unfamiliar islands of Japan. What awaits him is no paradise, but a barren land of language barriers and tribal conflict. See how Wu Dalang wields noodles as a blade and wisdom as a plow, sowing Chinese skills across this land. From struggling to establish himself to winning people's hearts, on the eve of the Warring States fires, he quietly founds a legendary nation blending Chinese and Japanese civilizations, ultimately becoming the “Founding Ancestor” revered by later generations. This is an epic tale of an ordinary man reborn from desperate circumstances, stirring history with shaobing and building a civilization through kindness and wisdom.
