The Way of Cinematography: Part Two

A Brief History of Vision: Media's Evolution and the Revolution in Perception.

Every leap in imaging technology is an epic tale of humanity pushing the boundaries of perception. The wet-plate collodion process sealed an instant onto glass, lending images material weight and a sense of reality. It announced that memory could be physically preserved.

In the age of film, chemical grains rendered light and shadow, elevating photography into the realm of art. Its irreversible developing process meant every frame bore the weight of time and the ritual of choice.

Digital technology completely dismantled the physical medium, turning light and shadow into bits that could be endlessly altered, copied, and shared. It dissolved the boundary between reality and fiction, shifting images from “recording” to “storytelling.”

The metaverse takes this transformation a step further, turning images into spaces for living.

Images are no longer pictures for people to look at, but worlds they can enter, redefining “presence” and “reality.” The ultimate transformation comes with brain-computer interfaces, which seek to bypass all external media and directly connect consciousness with images. This ultimately challenges the very nature of the image:

Is it a reflection of the outside world, or a projection of the mind?
