A Man Like Jade on the Road: A Gentleman Without Equal

When the fingertips of graduate student Li Yan touched the cracked piece of ancient jade, the kiln flames of the Xuande imperial kilns licked through a rift in time and space, reaching the steel framework of a modern greenhouse.

His left hand clutched a Three-in-One Compass capable of anchoring him to the Ming dynasty, while his right held a freshly pollinated ear of corn. In his palm was mud mixed from the soil of two worlds, and in his eyes, imperial porcelain blanks overlapped with new greenhouse seedlings.

From the mysteries hidden in broken jade at Liulichang, to the secrets of celestial timing in the Xuande kiln flames, and then to the paper-wrapped gunpowder he developed with Qi Jiguang on the Jiajing-era sea dikes, he followed a path laid with corn roots and cracks in kiln bricks, letting the ingenuity of the ancestors take root in modern soil along the climbing vines.

Hidden in the cracks of the ancient jade was an answer more moving than transmigration: a legend is simply a seed from every age finding its way into soil that understands it.
