Thirty-Eight and Unmarried: No Limits in My Career

At thirty-eight, Lin Wei is a client director at a real estate company. She has an impressive track record, but has not fulfilled society's expectations of marriage. At work, talk of the "35-year-old cutoff" has barely died down when she faces a new challenge: Zhou Yutong, a 28-year-old management trainee, arrives with an aggressive short-video proposal. Drawing on ten years of client insight, Lin Wei finds a balance between innovation and practicality, challenging the prejudice that older managers are out of touch.

But new challenges keep coming. Headquarters puts her in charge of a "cross-departmental talent development program." She must mentor young employees with little hands-on experience while also dealing with the worry that an unmarried woman "doesn't have enough energy." Her life has no daily routines of cooking and chores, only proposals revised until the early hours, the struggle to find common ground with her subordinates, and the awkward pressure to have children at gatherings with old friends. Yet there is also the satisfaction of signing a client, the warm glow of the office late at night, and the chance encounter with Su Mingzhe, an education consultant she can really talk to.

Some say she works too hard to be feminine; others advise her to settle for anyone and get married. But Lin Wei stays clear-eyed: marriage is never a requirement, and age should never be used to label people at work. From the "Starry Bay" project to the "Smart Community" training program, from resolving generational conflicts to reuniting with her ex-boyfriend, she uses her expertise and resilience to forge an unconstrained career path at thirty-eight. This is not an anxious story about a woman left on the shelf, but a true account of an ordinary woman staying true to herself and searching for purpose.
