Falling Starlight

[Sweet youth romance | Modern romance | Campus] “I saved her once, but I couldn't save her a second time. I helped my mentor dissect countless bodies, and in the end, I cut open my own heart with my own hands.” In their second year of middle school, he pulled her back from the brink of death. From then on, she wrote him in her diary and into her fate. On a moonlit night in their second year of high school, they stood side by side on the athletic field and made a wish: to get into Beijing Medical University together and make their future last forever. In their final year of high school, leukemia arrived before the admission letter. He knelt in the hospital doctors' office until his knees were raw, beating his dignity into bloody marks, only to hear, “Prepare for the worst.” She died on the first morning after the college entrance exams. He took her photograph with him to register, changed his choice of university to Sichuan Medical University, and made learning to speak with the dead the only way he could go on living. Seven years later, wearing a white coat, he performed his first autopsy. The body on the table was his best friend, the only person who knew all his stories. On the day he finished the report, he bought a bottle of pesticide and sat by her grave. Just like that day on the athletic field, the moonlight was still so gentle. “I came too late,” he said, “but now I can finally give my life back to you.” The next day, two gravestones stood close together, just as they had once promised: “If we can't live in the same world, then let us die in the same grave.”
