As a child, Shen Qingwan saved the destitute prince Xiao Lingchen at a palace banquet. In return, he solemnly promised, “In ten years, I will come and make you my bride.” Ten years later, he ruled the realm and welcomed her into the palace with extravagant betrothal gifts, showering her with every favor.

Yet even an emperor's deep affection could not withstand the jealousy of the inner palace.
