The Way of Being Human: How to Conduct Yourself and Get Along with Others

Introduction to the Art of Conducting Yourself

The art of conducting yourself is the delicate balance between interacting with others and cultivating yourself. At its heart lies a two-way practice: keeping true to yourself within and empathizing with others without.

Within, sincerity comes first. Avoid putting on a show, and never deceive others or yourself. Build your life on an authentic foundation, and you can earn lasting trust. Next comes knowing your responsibilities: do your best to honor your promises and willingly take responsibility for what your role demands. Responsibility is the foundation of a sound character. Finally, know when to stop. Do not covet what is not yours or cross boundaries. Only by holding to your principles can you move steadily toward lasting success.

With others, respect is key. Whatever their status or circumstances, treat them as equals, neither looking down on them nor groveling before them. Then there is tolerance: accept the differences between yourself and others, do not make a fuss over small mistakes, and resolve conflicts with an open heart. Gratitude matters too. Remember others' kindness and help, and respond even to the smallest warmth in a timely way, so goodwill can flow between people.

There is no fixed formula for conducting yourself. The answer lies in the details of everyday words and actions. Stay true to yourself and treat others well: that is the best way to make your way in the world.
