You and Me, Every Morning and Night

Lu Shiyu and Xu Zhaoxi have been “thick as thieves” since they were toddlers.

He was the perfect child everyone else’s parents wished they had, blessed with a genius’s aura. She was the carefree little tagalong who ran around after him.

She took a punch from a bully in the next class for him, and he let her copy all his homework throughout middle and high school.

Everyone said they were made for each other, except the two of them. One would rather die than confess, while the other had no idea.

At eighteen, he received an acceptance letter from a top university. She failed to get into college.

That summer, amid the incessant chirping of cicadas, she slipped a letter she had spent three years writing into the thickest dictionary on his bookshelf, then vanished from his world.

Seven years later, he was a rising star in the legal world, calm and self-possessed.

She, meanwhile, ran a small bakery in her hometown, surrounded by the warmth of everyday life.

At a former classmate’s wedding, the gears of fate began turning again.

He watched her greet the guests with practiced ease and a bright smile, yet treat him with polite distance. “Attorney Lu, long time no see.”

Belated, dull heartache surged within him. The girl who used to run after him, calling him “Brother Shiyu,” no longer had eyes for him.

Then, by chance, he opened that old, dust-covered dictionary, and a yellowed sheet of paper slipped out...

“Lu Shiyu, I’ve liked you since I was twelve, all the way to eighteen, from not understanding what it meant to knowing... It just seems like it’s too late.”

This time, he would cross mountains and seas, awkwardly learning how to draw closer, becoming a regular at her dessert shop, and setting aside his pride, all to find the girl he had lost.

“Zhaoxi, this time I’ll be the one to pursue you. No matter how long it takes or how hard it is.”
