A story combining a period setting, military life, and a woman pursuing a man.
In 1982, in a border military district, fashion designer Murong Jiu accidentally wanders into a military exercise zone. She uses her knowledge of tailoring to help officer Ouyang Ke out of a jam, then doggedly pursues him. She replaces his perpetually loose shirt buttons, blocks his training route with steamed buns, and even sews elbow pads from military uniform fabric, telling him, “If the clothes can’t protect people, what kind of uniform are they?”
The icy officer Ouyang Ke, haunted by a comrade’s death, is afraid to let himself fall in love. But this “thorn” pierces his defenses. Her pursuit is blunt: “I don’t want a quiet life. I want you.” He awkwardly tries to avoid her, yet fights desperately when she’s kidnapped and silently stands up for her when her redesigned protective gear saves a soldier.
Her needle and thread mend not only his uniform but also the wounds that keep him from daring to love. His gun protects the borders, and begins to protect her dream of becoming a designer. This tough love story, with a woman pursuing a man, hides amid the smoke of battle and shines between every stitch: “I’ll guard our country, and you’ll guard me. We’ll spend a lifetime fastening this button.”
