The Immortal Bone That Moves Mountains

On the black soil at the foot of Changbai Mountain, Zhang Shoushan was born bearing the strange name “Magnet for Spirits.”

From enduring “phantom illnesses” as a bewildered child to being forced during the Cultural Revolution to “raise the spirit pole” and establish a spirit altar, he struggled to accept his fate as a “spirit medium.” The Hu, Huang, Bai, Liu, and Hui spirit families became his companions, accompanying him through fifty years of hardship.

He tells fortunes and wards off misfortune, reads signs and answers questions, drives out evil spirits and treats illnesses, and adjusts feng shui, walking between the worlds of yin and yang, in the space between science and superstition.

From an isolated mountain village to a bustling city, from turbulent times to the information age,

he witnesses both human greed and kindness, and experiences firsthand the decline and struggle of tradition.

As his reputation grows, he faces the dangers of the occult world and rivalry from fellow practitioners. He is also drawn into the mystery of his own bloodline, the wish of the presiding spirit master, and a tangled fate with his destined nemesis.

Written in the first person with blood and tears, this is the autobiography of a great spirit medium from Northeast China. It tells the extraordinary life of a man who carried mountains through the trials of the mortal world and came to understand cause and effect amid the incense and bustle of human life.

He sees what is happening, heals the heart, and helps people weather their trials. In the end, what must be unraveled are the countless ties and fateful bonds connecting people and spirits.
