“When photographs fade, names disappear, and even the people who love you most can no longer remember your face... Can you still be sure you ever existed?”
While filming a century-old haunted house, folk documentary director Cui Mingzhe’s camera operator mysteriously vanishes. Even more terrifying, no one remembers that the man ever existed. As Cui investigates, he discovers that the house was once the site of a horrific massacre. The victims’ resentment has taken form as the “Faceless,” beings that devour the proof of the living’s existence.
Meanwhile, Yin Xia, a caregiver at a psychiatric hospital, finds that an Alzheimer’s patient in her care has suddenly begun recounting the details of a murder from sixty years ago with perfect clarity. Yet the patient’s medical records show that the old man has never visited the ancient house. When Cui Mingzhe’s image spontaneously appears in the patient’s sketchbook, the two realize that some force is systematically erasing their memories.
