The Art of Officialdom

The officialdom is a fathomless abyss, its depths impossible to gauge; the arts of power are like blades, sharp enough to wound their wielder. Written in classical Chinese, this book comprises ten essays and one hundred chapters. It lays out the ways of officialdom: establishing oneself, advancing and retreating, navigating relationships, managing subordinates, serving superiors, building a career, adapting to change, cultivating connections, learning from cautionary examples, and returning to one's true nature. Each chapter pairs concise classical sayings with explanations in plain language, illustrated by historical anecdotes and modern cases, laying bare the art of navigating the rise and fall of official life. At times it satirizes, at times it admonishes, seeming to praise while actually criticizing. Read it to grasp the shifting arts of power and strategy, and to see how unfathomable the human heart can be. Officials may learn from it to protect themselves; ordinary people may study it to understand its flaws.
