The New Legend of Mu Guiying

Synopsis of The Legend of Mu Guiying

During the Northern Song dynasty, the Liao army invaded, and the Yang family generals faced danger in battle. Mu Guiying charged out of Muke Stronghold, broke the enemy’s formation with her courage and cunning, and captured Yang Zongbao. She later joined the Song court and devoted herself to the campaign against the Liao.

The story follows her transformation from the young mistress of a mountain stronghold into a central figure among the Yang family generals. It depicts her bold figure on the battlefield, clad in red armor and wielding her embroidered phoenix saber, as well as her ingenious tactics when she breaks the Heavenly Gate Formation. It also reveals her softer side: the adjustments she makes as she joins the Yang family, and her steadfast devotion to protecting her family and homeland.

Moving beyond the one-dimensional image of a “female general,” the story brings Mu Guiying to life amid the clash of arms. Her legend is about more than military victories: she becomes an exemplary woman who breaks free of the constraints of traditional codes of conduct and protects her homeland through her own strength. It’s an inspiring and moving read.
