“Every sincere heart that never arrives is a death sentence delivered too late.”
Seven letters are forever locked in my drawer.
The first six were written to me by Zhang Cheng, tracing the path from passion to indifference, from attachment to distance, until only “Goodbye” remained.
The seventh was written by me to him, but I never managed to send it.
Five years ago, Zhang Cheng was the brightest genius at medical school. I was his quiet roommate, and the secret lover he kept hidden behind his lab data. Then an accident made him vanish into the crowd, taking all his unfulfilled promises with him.
Five years later, I became an emergency physician, while Zhang Cheng arrived at the hospital as an investor, with his fiancée by his side. We met again on a rainy night. His gaze passed over me as if I were a stranger.
“Did you… get my letters back then?” I finally asked.
Zhang Cheng sneered. “What letters? You didn't even say goodbye to me.”
It turned out the most painful missed connection wasn't loving each other and then parting. It was writing “Save me” to you a thousand times, only for you to think it was just a scrap of paper in the dust.
“What did you write in the seventh letter?”
“The last thing in my life that had anything to do with you.”
