They both found themselves thinking that perhaps the other could only be happy if they were dead.
That was the literary version of the blurb. Here’s the no-nonsense version.
This is a love story about two people who were forced together as partners from childhood, spending every day in each other’s company because of a strange disturbance in their world: “Nightmares” (the details will be explained in the story). As they help each other evade the reaper’s pursuit time and again, the tender feelings in their hearts begin to take root.
Just as their love is about to bloom, they learn the truth about themselves: only one of them can die so the other can be set free.
In the end, after much back-and-forth, they confess their feelings to each other and finally resolve that even if they have to die, they’ll do it together. Only then can they have the happiness they truly want.

The overall tone is rather somber, though there are occasional bursts of humor. It ends happily.
Set in a fictional world, so please don’t read too much into it.
