Crayon Shin-chan: Selling Barbecue in Kasukabe

On the bustling streets of Kasukabe, Liang Mengmeng opens a little barbecue stall. In the smoky warmth rising from the charcoal, she grills more than just sizzling, fatty skewers: she serves up the comfort and kindness hidden in everyday life.

Crayon Shin-chan shows up every day with Himawari and Shiro. One minute he’s asking for “Action Kamen-style grilled sausages,” the next he’s spending his pocket money to buy Shiro some jerky. Nene waits in line clutching her stuffed rabbit, insisting on “grilled eggplant that tastes as good as Mommy’s.” Kazama claims that “only little kids eat street food,” yet always stops by after school for a skewer of grilled vegetables to cleanse his palate. Masao shyly offers his pocket money, just to try the “grilled squid that makes you brave” Shin-chan recommended.

From the first cherry blossoms of spring to the warmth of the kotatsu as winter snow falls, the barbecue stall becomes the children’s secret hideout and bears witness to the little moments shared by the neighbors: the comforting grilled kidney skewers Hiroshi gets when he comes home late from work, the surprising combination of homemade pickles Misae brings over with barbecue, and the delivery rider’s “Careful, the road’s slippery” as he picks up an order in the rain…

There are no earth-shattering plot twists, just laughter and companionship amid the crackle of charcoal. Liang Mengmeng’s barbecue stall is like a little lamp in Kasukabe, bringing people’s ordinary days together with the warmth of its cooking. It grills up life’s most genuine flavor: spicy, warm, and full of hope.
