Li Weiguo, a modern military academy instructor and researcher of Party history, accidentally leads a 24-man reconnaissance company equipped with near-future individual combat Systems to Coal Hill in March of the seventeenth year of Chongzhen's reign. After saving the Chongzhen Emperor, he appears to support the Ming court, but within him burns a red ideal: he will clear away every obstacle with an iron fist and ignite the spark of socialism ahead of its time atop the ruins of the Ming dynasty, rewriting China's humiliating modern history once and for all. In the end, however, he discovers that this magnificent life was actually one great dream spanning time and space.
