Heaven and Mount Ling have decided that the four newly appointed Buddhas and Bodhisattvas have too much free time, so they assign them to “train their successors.” Their four disciples must complete a series of “internship tasks” (a simplified version of the 72 trials?) to earn temporary positions in the Three Realms.
