El Salvador is a coastal country in northern Central America, bordering Honduras and Guatemala. It is known as the "Land of Volcanoes" due to its many volcanoes.
El Salvador was once inhabited by Indians and became a Spanish colony in 1524. It gained independence in 1821 following the regional wave of independence and established an independent republic in 1841. El Salvador is a member of various cooperation mechanisms in Latin America and the Caribbean and is home to the secretariat of the Central American Integration System.
El Salvador emphasizes safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity, supports the establishment of a new international order based on equality, justice and cooperation, and advocates the democratization of international relations.
