The Calamity of Kunyu and the Mountains and Seas

In a cultivation world blending the exotic beasts of the Classic of Mountains and Seas with Daoist philosophy, disturbances in the Kunyu leyline, the earth’s spiritual nexus, trigger a world-ending calamity. The Yang-sect immortal sects, led by Yuxu Palace, wage a deadly struggle against the Nine Nether Yin sect, which hides in Guixu and commands ferocious beasts. Huang Chengyue, lord of the qilin who guards the Central Province and a descendant of the Five Elements divine beast bloodlines, and Xuanming (Xiyue), the holy maiden of the Nine Nether, are bound by the lotus flowers that grew side by side on Kunlun in a past life. Their love spans three lifetimes, yet in this life they face each other in battle as enemies. The Nine Nether Cult uses the Source-Eroding Demon Pestle to devour the Five Elements’ origins and incites conflict among the five clans: the sword tomb of the Metal Clan is tainted by baleful energy, the Azure Dragon’s Jianmu tree is corrupted by death energy, the Weakwater floods the Northern Sea, and the Vermilion Bird’s karmic fire burns the sky. Huang Chengyue wields the power of Xirang to protect all living beings, while Xiyue struggles between destruction and redemption. As the Kunyu leyline nears collapse and Taotie appears to devour all life, Huang Chengyue grasps that “great virtue demands sacrifice” and shatters his own qilin horn to mend the leyline. Xiyue merges with Guixu’s will and becomes Xuanming, ultimately sacrificing herself to the Dao to quell the raging tide of death energy. In the final battle, the survivors of the four clans sacrifice their bloodlines to rekindle the Five Elements. Huang Chengyue reverses the Demon Pestle’s effects, but in doing so brings about the collapse of Guixu. Xuanming uses her remnant soul to open the Gate of Guixu and bury the Nine Nether, while Huang Chengyue shatters Xirang to seal the abyss, scattering himself into spiritual rain that revives the mountains and rivers. In the world after the calamity, ordinary people sing The Kunyu Calamity, and children plant green lotuses before the Houtu Shrine. The rebirth of the mountains and seas hints at the heavenly cycle: “The earth bears all things; when calamity burns to ash, the Dao is born.” The story portrays the three lifetimes of love and calamity between Huang Chengyue and Xiyue: first, as lotus flowers growing side by side on Kunlun (innocence); second, divided between immortals and demons (separation); and third, becoming one with the leyline together (transcendence). “The ultimate romance: destroying heaven and earth just to die together for the Dao.”
