Waves of Change, 1978

From the thunderous blasts that carved a road through the hills of Shekou, Shenzhen, in 1978, Lin Xia began her career with the meat cleaver of a state-run department store, famed for its “one-cut precision.” The silver bangle on her left wrist was engraved with the codes of an era: the mark of survival during the 1942 Henan famine, an abacus pattern representing the 4.8 yuan per capita income of urban residents in 1980, calculations of futures margins during the 1997 Asian financial crisis, and finally a mortgage contract from the 2008 global crisis. Caught between a planned economy and a market economy, she formed a reform-era powerhouse with Chen Mo, a demobilized soldier, and Su Qing, a fashionista. They used a Seagull camera to capture evidence while exposing corruption at a supply and marketing cooperative, defused worker protests with a “4:4:2” shareholding plan when they founded a clothing factory, and checked a hedge fund’s models with an abacus during the financial crisis. As the Shenzhen International Trade Center rose at a rate of “one floor every three days,” as workers at a Cambodian factory asked to sing “Tian Mi Mi” one more time, and as employees born in the 1990s rebuilt sales networks with TikTok algorithms, that silver bangle bore witness to it all: how workplace rules evolved from worship of the “one-cut precision” craft to the capital games of the “three spreadsheets,” before finally returning to the essence of humanity in a world of holographic projections.
