Strange Tales of the Five Immortals: I Become a Spirit Medium in the Northeast

Chen Shan is a down-on-his-luck young man delivering takeout in an old industrial city in Northeast China. His biggest worry is next month's rent. His only “inheritance” is a hazy memory of his grandfather's life as a shaman, and a “yin-heavy constitution” that attracts ghosts and evil spirits. During a delivery to a haunted house, a vengeful ghost came for his life. As he hovered near death, Hu Santaiye, the household guardian spirit his grandfather had worshipped, appeared and saved him. Forced to face reality, Chen Shan realized that if he wanted to stay alive, he had to inherit his grandfather's mantle, become a disciple-medium, establish a spirit altar, and serve the immortals! And so, five “old ancestors” joined carefree Chen Shan: a dignified and wise fox immortal leader, a talkative yellow weasel who ran errands, a cold-faced but formidable willow spirit, a white immortal with miraculous healing hands, and a money-mad gray rat. By day he scraped by; by night he helped people “break through their troubles”: children who had lost their souls, troublesome yellow weasels, an ancient well bound by resentment, a keyboard warrior ghost haunting an urban house... Strange happenings kept unfolding throughout the forests and rivers of Northeast China. But that was far from the extent of his troubles. The crooked cultivator Zhao Laoxie watched from the shadows, the truth behind his parents' bizarre deaths remained shrouded in mystery, and everything was tied to a “secret treasure of Guandong” powerful enough to shake the spirit world. As fallen immortals and ancient demons bared their fangs, Chen Shan, a half-trained disciple-medium, had to take up the banner of his spirit altar and lead his motley group of “immortal partners” through a world of treacherous hearts, ghosts, and spirits to carve out a path to survival!
