His antics are steeped in the warmth of rural life. By the end, you’ll be thinking of nothing but his chipped jade seal and goofy grin! Gousheng finds a jade seal with a monkey-shaped knob in a bamboo basket at the old house. His cousin tricks him into handing it over, and he scrapes his knee trying to get it back, but finds wild duck eggs by the river.
The old locust tree at Fourth Grandpa’s house is chosen to provide beams for the production team’s new warehouse. The whole village gathers to watch it being cut down, and a hollow in the tree holds a litter of newborn weasels. Gousheng secretly takes one in.
The village opens a communal canteen, and at first there are steamed white buns at every meal. Gousheng pretends to twist his ankle so he can get an extra bun. His mother catches him and makes him stand as punishment, but he overhears the adults whispering, “We’re running out of grain.”
The river bend freezes over, and the children slide around on the ice. Gousheng falls through and is rescued by Uncle Wang, a veteran passing by. Uncle Wang tells him stories about the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, and Gousheng secretly gives him the jade seal, which he later gets back, “to calm his nerves.”
The campaign to make steel sweeps through the village, and every household donates iron goods. Gousheng’s iron cooking pot is taken away, and his father trades a copper pipe bowl to get half a sack of sweet potatoes in return. That night, Gousheng sneaks out and takes apart his family’s door to use as “steelmaking material,” only to be chased and beaten by his father.
