“I,” Shen Yu, am a drama fan who loves digging into the details. I know the ins and outs of every show and its hidden character dynamics, and I’m good at spotting sparks between couples. My best friend, A Linwei, is a mischievous gossip lover who enjoys uncovering character scandals and behind-the-scenes stories. Trouble seems to follow her, and she can always turn serious plotlines into hilarious new memes. One night, as we stayed up binge-watching classic dramas, I was on edge over Ziwei and Erkang’s misunderstanding in My Fair Princess and squealing at Qingchuan and the Eighth Prince’s sweet yet heartbreaking romance in Palace. Suddenly, the fan journals piled on the table began to glow strangely, and we were swept into the drama worlds. We gained the ability to transmigrate to different shows as their popularity rose over the years, taking on minor roles such as maids, pages, and inn workers. Our mission was to enjoy the romance and the gossip, witness and help bring about iconic couple moments, and collect fragments of “strange and wonderful happenings in the drama worlds.”
We must follow each show’s historical setting and the characters’ personalities and behavior. We cannot force major plotlines to change, such as having Liu Sanhao pick up a knife and start attacking people in Beyond the Realm of Conscience. If we act too out of character, a “plot correction wave” will trigger and send us back to reality to reflect, after which we won’t be able to transmigrate again for a while.
