The Tough Man’s Sweet Little Wife

The Sweet Wife of a Rough Country Man tells the story of Lin Jiaolan, a modern dessert shop owner who accidentally transmigrates into a farming novel set during the War of Resistance Against Japan. Reborn as a doomed minor character, she begins a sweet romance amid the chaos of war with Liang Lixing, a rugged man from a mountain village. When she first arrives, the pampered Lin Jiaolan is terrified by the soot-black kang bed and the fierce-looking Liang Lixing. She quickly gives in and pretends to be pitiful, then turns around and uses modern slang to roast him mercilessly. Afraid of bugs and the dark but quick-witted, she wins the rough man's heart through his stomach by making sweet potato cakes from coarse grain. She is also always thinking of ways to “make money” with modern knowledge. Though Liang Lixing, a hunter, looks cold and hard, he is actually tongue-tied and softhearted. He complains that Lin Jiaolan is spoiled, yet quietly gives her the warm side of the kang. When he goes hunting in the mountains, he makes a point of picking wild fruit for her, and when she is afraid of the dark, he stays by the door chopping wood. He is intensely possessive and cannot stand seeing other men near her. When she flirts with him, his ears turn red, but he stubbornly insists, “Don't fool around.” From sleeping on opposite sides of the kang, their “Chu River and Han Border,” to working together to stockpile grain; from the flustered excitement of being caught bathing outdoors to the bashful push and pull of their wedding night, they gradually fall for each other amid the chaos of everyday life. Amid the flames of war, a sweet and affectionate wife softens a rough man's heart, while a brooding hunter answers her love with protection. Together, they find a deeply moving love in the hardships of the times.
