Lin Mo, a modern history graduate student, accidentally touches a cultural relic in a museum and transmigrates to Zunhua, Hebei, in July 1928. He arrives just as Sun Dianying’s troops blow open the tombs of Empress Dowager Cixi and the Qianlong Emperor in the infamous looting of the Eastern Qing Tombs. Through a twist of fate, he becomes a secretary in the staff office under Sun Dianying. Experiencing this shocking tomb-raiding disaster firsthand through modern eyes, he struggles to survive in a chaotic age while trying, with what little influence he has, to alter the course of history in small ways or at least leave an accurate record of the truth.
