The Hidden Dragon of Two Lifetimes: Chongzhen Rebuilds the Ming

Li Ming, a modern history buff, transmigrated into the late Ming dynasty twice, becoming the Chongzhen Emperor, Zhu Youjian. On his first transmigration, he was full of fiery ambition, but merely recreated history's tragedy. His eagerness to eliminate Wei Zhongxian let the Donglin faction grow unchecked and drove the treasury to ruin. He believed slander and executed Yuan Chonghuan, destroying Liaodong's great wall. He relied on nothing but suppression to deal with the peasant armies, until Li Zicheng broke through the capital and he hanged himself on Coal Hill. As he lay dying, the snowstorm burying Coal Hill buried with it his endless regret at being "powerless to turn the tide." Fate gave him another chance. On his second transmigration, he returned to the beginning of his reign in the seventh year of the Tianqi era. This time, armed with memories of his previous life, he suppressed his hatred of the eunuch faction and chose to keep Wei Zhongxian in service for the time being. The corrupt eunuch, whom history had nailed to the pillar of shame, became his "blade" for keeping the Donglin faction in check and extracting revenue from Jiangnan. He moved cautiously, using the secret police to keep Wei Zhongxian under control while quietly laying his plans: appointing Lu Xiangsheng and Sun Chuanting ahead of time, correcting his handling of Yuan Chonghuan, guarding against Hong Chengchou's defection, and even trying to recruit "rebel generals" like Li Dingguo. At court, he deftly navigated between the Donglin faction, the eunuchs, and the pragmatic officials, using an iron hand to clean up the bureaucracy. For the treasury, he reopened mining and trade taxes, taking on the gentry head-on. At the borders, he strengthened the army with firearms and rebuilt the Liaodong defenses, turning the tide in battles such as Songjin and the Jisi campaign. Amid the rebellions, he combined force with conciliation to divide the peasant armies and keep the Ming dynasty alive. From the despair of hanging himself on Coal Hill, to the patience of secretly wielding power within the palace, and finally to the determined revival of the dynasty, the struggles and triumphs of Chongzhen across two lifetimes would ultimately write a different ending for the Ming amid the blood and flames of its final years.
