The Epic of Cause and Effect: Return to the Ruins is an epic tale blending fantasy, adventure, and intertwined destinies. It tells the legendary story of Chen Xuan, who transmigrates into the mythical prehistoric world and uses his wit and courage to fight the forces of chaos. Chen Xuan was an ordinary office worker. While working overnight to finish a project, he clicked on a mysterious ad and unexpectedly transmigrated to the prehistoric world. He found himself in a perilous alternate world, injured at the back of his head, surrounded by a strange and dangerous environment. As he fled, he discovered translucent threads of cause and effect, and gained mysterious abilities by killing a Three-Eyed Wang. He then acquired the Compass of Cause and Effect, beginning a journey that would change the course of his fate. Hunted by the Bloodscale Clan, Chen Xuan collapsed while escaping and was rescued by Daoist Wuchang. Wuchang told him the truth about the prehistoric world and the importance of the threads of cause and effect. At the Academy of the Great Void, Chen Xuan made new companions, but became entangled in a plot by A Gu, a Bloodscale Clan spy. At a life-or-death moment, he used the Plunder of Cause and Effect to expose A Gu's true identity, demonstrating his wisdom and courage. Chosen for his talent to take on a challenge involving the Chaos of Cause and Effect, Chen Xuan fell into a trap in the Ruins, and Instructor Lu was corrupted by chaos. During the battle with Instructor Lu, Daoist Wuchang, who was Chen Xuan from the future, dissipated to protect him, revealing the great responsibility Chen Xuan bore to save the prehistoric world. Chen Xuan wandered into a battlefield and used the Weaving of Cause and Effect to save Wu soldiers, but was then hunted by the Three Azure Birds. Ancestor Wu Xuanming came to his rescue, and their fates became intertwined. Chen Xuan learned that Xuanming was afflicted with chaos poison and could only be cured with a fragment of Pangu's axe and the vital essence of the Twelve Ancestor Wus. Chen Xuan headed to the Netherworld Blood Sea to find Ancestor Wu Houtu. Along the way, he faced one peril after another and joined forces with Houtu to fight Ancestor Minghe.
