Yanqiu Leaves No Trace

Inkstone Autumn Without a Trace: Synopsis

Inkstone Autumn Without a Trace is an epic novel about the covert front, telling the story of agent Jin Yanqiu’s half-century career undercover and his spiritual odyssey.

Born in Beiping during turbulent times, Jin Yanqiu witnessed the humiliation of his country in his childhood and was tempered by progressive ideas in his youth. In 1947, he chose of his own accord to enter the deepest darkness, accepting orders to remain undercover for the long term. From then on, he became “someone else.” With exceptional linguistic skills and intelligence, he rose from an ordinary interpreter at the Shanghai consulate to infiltrate the heart of American intelligence, passing along information at a crucial moment in the Cold War that would shape the strategic landscape.

Yet this legendary path was strewn with the thorns of loneliness. He had to sever all ties with his past, build a family on lies, and keep the cruelest secret from his beloved wife. Every day, he suffered between loyalty and guilt, an extraordinary mission and ordinary longings. Like a silent inkstone, he endured the grinding force of his times, hiding every trace of himself in the dark ink so that his faith might become a thunderclap without a sound.

With sweeping prose, the novel unfolds a grand historical panorama. Through profound, delicate psychological portrayals, it also probes the fervent yet solitary soul of an unsung man. This is more than a tale of espionage: it is a solemn epic of sacrifice, faith, and the eternal presence of those who leave “no trace.”
