Yeluyan, a graduate student in the Department of Modern History (a descendant of the Khitan), and Murong Yan, a master of mechanics (a descendant of the Xianbei), accidentally traveled to Bianjing during the Jingyou period of the Northern Song Dynasty. The former became the fierce bustard of the brothel's "Zuichunfang" and was bound to the "Fenghua System", which required him to run a romantic house and gather connections to improve his "Fashion Value"; the latter became a poor scholar in a ruined temple, activating the "Gewu System" and surviving by analyzing the structure of all things and improving ancient crafts.
One is strategizing in the powder pile and turning the brothel into an intelligence hub; the other is tinkering in the market, using mechanical knowledge to move the gears of the times. When the Khitan Madam met the Xianbei scholar, with the support of the dual systems, the two went from testing each other to joining forces to break the situation. They not only had to deal with peer strife and officialdom infighting, but also had to survive in the undercurrents of Xixia's harassment and the New Deal. Using modern wisdom as their blade, they wrote a legend that transcended ethnic groups and stirred up the storm in the blossoming city of Bianjing.
