A taboo has been passed down in the remote, isolated village of Suolong: on nights of torrential rain, the “dead” crawl out of the mass grave behind the village and wander its streets. Their skin is ashen gray and their eyes hollow. The villagers call them “walking corpses.” The villagers refuse to speak of them, simply shutting their doors and windows before a storm and covering their mirrors with black cloth. They say the walking corpses can use mirrors to detect the breath of the living. And it all has to do with a “sacrifice” that was covered up thirty years ago.
