Synopsis

"Camel Xiangzi" is one of the masterpieces of Mr. Lao She, a master of modern Chinese literature. It was created in 1936. This outstanding realist novel is set in Peiping during the warlord war in the 1920s. Through the tragic life trajectory of the rickshaw driver Xiangzi's struggle, struggle, and eventual destruction, it profoundly depicts the miserable life of the working people at the bottom of old Chinese cities, and reveals the dark nature of semi-colonial and semi-feudal society and its ruthless destruction of human nature. The protagonist Xiangzi, a young, strong, honest and kind-hearted bankrupt farmer from the countryside, came to Peiping City with the simple dream of buying a rickshaw of his own through his honest labor and living an independent and free life. He is as hardworking and tenacious as a camel. However, in the face of the cruel social reality - plunder by soldiers, oppression by car manufacturers, blackmail by detectives, as well as illness and subsequent blows in life - Xiangzi's hard-earned savings were wiped out again and again, and his dream of buying a car was shattered again and again. What is even more distressing is that the weak and sincere emotional sustenance he cherished with Xiao Fuzi was eventually ruthlessly crushed. With cold and profound writing, the novel delicately depicts Xiangzi's mental journey from being full of hope and hard work, to gradually doubting, struggling and resisting, and finally to numbness, degeneration, and becoming "urban garbage". This is not only a tragedy of personal struggle, but also the most painful indictment of the dark era that "did not allow good people to have a way out".
