He knows nothing of etiquette, but understands the sorrow between her brows. He carves her wooden hairpins, stands up to idle gossips, and accompanies her from the red-walled mansion to a little home in Jiangnan. Jia Baoyu lets go of his obsession and finds happiness with the gentle, considerate Lü E. Wang Xifeng puts aside her schemes and proves her ability to manage the household. Even the Xue family learns to run its affairs steadily through life’s ups and downs. The crabapple blossoms at the Rongguo Mansion and the peach blossoms of Jiangnan bloom in turn year after year, while the two families stay connected through the children’s laughter. There’s no sorrowful collapse with the family scattering to the winds, only growth amid the warmth of everyday life. When the gold hairpin in Daiyu’s hair shines beside her wooden one, and the stone monkey boy’s golden headband bears the marks of time, they finally understand: home is not some particular mansion, but the warmth in a loved one’s palm and a bond that cannot be severed, no matter how many miles lie between them. Mutual first loves. Xue Baochai gets a bit of a hard time early on (don’t read if you dislike that). Sun Wukong and Lin Daiyu are a fixed couple. Jia Baoyu has a love interest. Everyone gets a happy ending (don’t read if you dislike that)!!! The early chapters are witty and humorous, playing up Daiyu’s sharp-tongued nature. Later, the story shifts toward the quiet everyday life of the couples, simple and peaceful. There’s no immortality or anything like that. Everything follows the natural order.
