The Road to Death

The Death Line revolves around Jiangcheng’s subway system, where the shadow of the 1998 No. 307 train disaster has never faded. While investigating a series of deaths, reporter Lin Mo discovers strange gear-shaped marks on every victim, with the clues pointing straight to a long-buried case.

The gear-shaped mark in the newspaper archive, the secret hidden in the concrete of Office No. 307, the blood-vine trap in the abandoned mine tunnel... Each conceals a fragment of the “Gear System”: a terrifying experiment powered by human modification and emotional energy. The 1998 disaster was merely the tip of the iceberg, the result of the System spiraling out of control.

Zhou Ming’s encrypted folder, Zhong Ming’s deranged manuscript, the disappearance of Xiao Ya’s brother... The fates of seven test subjects are locked together, their gears grinding against one another. As Lin Mo’s team edges closer to the truth, modified humans, clones, and mirror-image phantoms appear one after another. Only then do they realize that the so-called “System” has long since taken root in the city’s lifeblood, and everyone caught up in it is a tooth on its gears, liable to snap at any moment.

In the struggle between humanity and machinery, is family love the only key, or the fuel that will hasten destruction? The wronged souls embedded in the rails, the reflections behind the glass, and the “new humans” in their embryos will all face the gears’ final halt when the truth is revealed: either redemption, or mutual annihilation.
