Weaving Strings of the Galaxy

When the “Galactic Noose” first revealed its true form on the star chart, the universe seemed like a patient fisherman, casting a net with threads of spatial fibers and slowly tightening it around the Milky Way’s throat. Zhang Chen stared at the screen. The stars in the Kuiper Belt had already been tangled into knots, their original orbits impossible to make out.

Thirty-seven years. The number was like an old wound, scabbed over, etched into the main console of the Sinan. It was enough time for a green boy to grow into a young man others could rely on, and for the wheat in a field to be harvested dozens of times. But for humanity to build a ship fast enough to outrun the noose, it was nowhere near enough.

During the 72 hours spent crossing the “Dragon Vein String,” a layer of white frost seemed to form on the skin, like the icy patterns that appear on a window on a winter morning. Only three days passed aboard the ship, but Earth aged by 1,200 years. The pomegranate tree in the courtyard back home had probably become a shadow trapped inside stone.

When they reached the purple planet, however, the landscape was strangely full of life. The place was so unfamiliar it made their skin crawl, yet in a peculiar way it made them want to crouch down and feel the warmth of the soil, like touching a freshly turned field back home.

Some couldn’t bear it and insisted on going back for one last look, even though Earth had long since become an illusion, like flowers reflected in a mirror or the moon in water. Others stayed and tried to sow Earth’s wheat in the silicon-based soil, like planting flowers in a crack in a rock.

There are no superheroes in this story, only ordinary people from Earth. They fumble as they repair the universe, like a band of carpenters hammering nails, tapping away at the stars overhead. Yet their inborn courage blows again and again across the ashes of the stars, like the wind. One day, it will kindle a spark that sets the heavens ablaze.
