Taohua River flows in silence, bearing witness to the generations of daughters by its banks and their fates cycling through the years.
More than twenty years later, Lin Limei, now a successful businesswoman, returns to her hometown with her daughter, Meixiang, hoping to come to terms with the humiliating past in which she was crushed by her intellectually disabled husband and domineering great-aunt. This land buried her youth, but it also tempered her rebirth.
At the same time, Wu Yanran, a reporter from the provincial capital, follows the falling blossoms to the river, determined to investigate a long-buried case. Guo Ziyan, who drank poison in despair at her father’s grave all those years ago, seems to have been caught up in a tragedy with a more complicated secret behind it. As Wu Yanran makes her way along the riverbank, her camera captures not only the desolate village and solemn hills of graves, but also the laments of women buried by time: Wu Lanlan, who paid a terrible price for a “taboo” love; Fu Jinhua, who fled deep into the mountains for love and ultimately found redemption; and Lin Limei herself, whose path out of despair was paved with blood and tears.
The whirlpool of Taohua River holds too many similar fates: desires suppressed, dignity sacrificed, struggles swept up by the times. Lin Limei returns, trying to make peace with the past, while Wu Yanran is determined to reopen old wounds. Their paths converge by the river, gradually revealing an even more startling connection: Wu Yanran’s mother, Wu Lanlan, was the woman deeply entangled in Taohua River’s tragedy all those years ago. Her daughter’s search is drawing ever closer to the truth her mother spent a lifetime escaping.
The river carries falling blossoms and blood and tears, drawing the living and the dead, the past and the present, back into the current of fate. The struggles and downfalls, sacrifices and rebirths of the daughters by the river will finally come together in the roar of Taohua River, composing a long song of suffering, resilience, and redemption.
