The Great Sage Arrives: Northeast Guardian Immortals Battle Cyber Demons

Sun Youcai is an ordinary, unlucky guy from Tielinggou Town in Northeast China. His greatest ambition in life is to grill skewers without burning them and avoid getting ripped off when selling a car. Then something explodes out of the kang bed in his ancestral home, scaring half his soul right out of him! Even stranger, an irritable old pal appears in his head: the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, Sun Wukong!

“Back in my day, I wreaked havoc in the Heavenly Palace…” “Brother Monkey, give it a rest! First, let’s figure out how to deal with that weasel spirit haunting Widow Wang, okay?”

Stripped of his magic and trapped in his own spirit, Sun Wukong becomes a “guardian spirit” that only Sun Youcai can see and hear. A big-mouthed, cowardly young man from Northeast China and a frustrated, proud, down-on-his-luck Monkey King are forced to team up, using wildly unorthodox methods like scattering stove ash, setting off firecrackers, and cursing up a storm in northeastern style to deal with the town’s endless parade of spooky incidents: a livestreamed haunting turns into a real case of possession, corpses break into wild dancing at the funeral home in the middle of the night, and terrifying calls echo from deep in the old forest…

They only wanted to put together a makeshift “Great Sage shrine” and get by on offerings, but they draw the scorn of Hu Xiaocui, a bona fide local spirit-medium, and the knowing gaze of the scheming Master Chang. Worse still, behind these seemingly unrelated evil spirits, there seems to be a grand conspiracy throwing the balance between Yin and Yang across all of Northeast China into turmoil! Cyber ghosts whisper across the internet, ancient evil arts awaken beneath the frozen earth, and even Grandfather Hu San can no longer sit still.

When an inhuman roar comes from deep inside an abandoned factory, and Sun Wukong’s fiery eyes uncover a shocking secret pointing straight at him, Sun Youcai finally understands: there’s a reason he became this “vessel”! The skies over this corner of Northeast China are about to change! And he and this “Brother Monkey from the streets”
