Wei Jiamin woke to the choking stench of rotten meat.
Her eyelids felt glued shut with superglue. She forced them open a crack, and a swaying emergency light came into view. Its sickly green glow fell across the wall opposite, making the mottled bloodstains look like strawberry jam from the supermarket’s discount section. A few strands of something, whether intestines or wires, dangled from the wall.
“Shit, where am I?” She tried to sit up, but a sharp pain suddenly exploded at the back of her head, as if someone had pressed a power drill to her temple and cranked it up to the third setting. She touched it, and sticky liquid trickled down her wrist. It smelled even more overwhelming than expired yogurt.
