Spring Deep in the Vermilion Gates: Letters to Pei Lang

Set during the Tianbao era, this story follows Yang Zhaorong, a collateral-line noblewoman who takes her elder sister’s place in marriage and enters the Pei household, where she must find her way through the vortex of the inner residence and the imperial court. Thanks to her thorough knowledge of the Tang Code and her keen powers of observation, Yang Zhaorong sees through her elder sister’s plot from the bloody talisman in the bridal sedan and turns the tables during an incident at a tea stall. After entering the household, she faces Lady Li’s harassment and counters it with the force of ritual and law. In a case involving grain, she and Pei Jie go from testing one another to standing side by side. The story can focus on the interplay between domestic intrigue and military politics: Yang Zhaorong uses an audit to expose a traitor and joins forces with Pei Jie against the Yang clan and factions at court. Through crises involving a Huihe conspiracy and embezzlement of military provisions, she demonstrates women’s wisdom and resilience in the struggle for power. The story also traces the subtle changes as the two move from cooperation to mutual affection, highlighting how individuals in troubled times struggle to choose between family and country.
