1937: Grandma's Childhood in the Countryside

**Synopsis of *Grandma's Rural Childhood in 1937*** Told from the perspective of its protagonist, Xiaocui, *Grandma's Rural Childhood in 1937* recounts her childhood in the countryside during a time of raging war. Through a series of vivid chapters, it paints a portrait of an era that is at once poetic and brutal. Xiaocui's life is ordinary yet full of warmth. She listens to nature in “Riverbank Fisherman's Song” and experiences the bustle of everyday life in “The Little Shop Through the Seasons.” “The Stage in the Dark” and “Dreams in Pearls” reflect her hazy longing for a better life. But the shadow of war gradually falls over the village: “The Wind from Afar” brings unease, while “Blood-Red Dusk” and “Bloodstains by the River” expose the truth of the violence. In “Whispers at Midnight,” her family quietly discusses fleeing, and “The Uninvited Guest” plunges the village into panic. Amid the turmoil, Xiaocui witnesses the invaders' brutality and her loved ones' resilience. The chapter “A Young Heart's Ambition” depicts her courage as she secretly carries messages for the guerrillas. “A Tearful Farewell” and “The Empty Chair” record the heart-piercing grief of losing loved ones to war. Even so, she holds on to hope: in “Winter's End, Spring's Promise,” she gazes at the river as it thaws, as if glimpsing the dawn of the future. This book is not only the coming-of-age epic of one girl, but also a hymn to ordinary people who preserve their dignity and yearn for the light amid hardship. Through Xiaocui's eyes, readers can feel the warmth of that history and glimpse the faint light of humanity in the darkest of times.
