The Gambler’s Comeback: A Wild Ride Out of Debt

As La Qianqiu wiped sweat in the back kitchen of a hot pot restaurant, the lyrics on the wall yellowed in the greasy fumes. A Chaoshan man with debts of over four hundred thousand yuan staked everything on his name: if it takes tears to handle the heat, he’ll still fight to carve out a way forward.

He had once been an e-commerce wunderkind who found a fortune in a heap of scrap plastic, and a gambler who saw his entire fortune vanish overnight on the futures market. After the pandemic, he tried writing web novels and making AI music, but kept smashing into the iron wall of reality. The night his child fell ill, his wife quietly brought out her dowry. He hid in the stairwell and cried with his fist clenched, his tears falling onto his phone screen and lighting up the three characters of “La Qianqiu.”

Fate loved playing tricks, but he began to learn how to turn the tables. Starting with the hot pot base on his own dining table, he simmered failure into chili sauce and stir-fried despair into a signature dish. His songs played on repeat in the restaurant. “The Desperate Song of a Debtor” was no longer a cry of sorrow, but a war drum for someone making a comeback. He dared to eat all three kinds of meat and dared to gamble with dice. He lived forty-eight hours of life in just twenty.

If success had a flavor, it would surely be the fiery red taste of sweat mingled with chili peppers. Standing at the crest of success and looking back on the ups and downs of his journey, he couldn’t help but ask: When the times shove you into a valley, what should a person do? Sink into despair, or turn yourself into a blazing fire?
