Synopsis

The gods make dungeons their prisons, and all living beings wager their flesh and blood for a chance to survive.

This is an endless gamble with souls on the line: win and live, lose and face eternal ruin.

Zhong Li, a mystic diviner who can calculate the secrets of fate with his fan, cannot see through a deadly trap in which lives are staked on one another. When he plunges into a place strewn with corpses, he bets on a trace of ghostly blue phosphor dust on a butterfly’s wings: the final remnant of the “Golden Gambler” Merino’s return as a butterfly. In the icy pool, a mermaid’s tail cuts through the darkness. The capitalist who once broke with him whispers in his ear, “Honey, do you have a death wish?” A hidden needle glints along the fan’s ribs. Coughing blood, Zhong Li smiles faintly. “But I made the right bet, didn’t I?”

They were once allies bound by mutual interest, and later mortal enemies who passed like strangers. Merino wields playing cards like blades and bears the curse of an experimental subject. To sever their ties, he pushed away the one he loved, yet gladly took a blade for them and died, scattering into a sky full of blue butterflies. The elegant yet cruel collector Lin Faluo used a violin bow as a shackle and a canvas as a cage, imprisoning the mad scientist Yingzhi as an eternal exhibit. Yet in the final movement, he shattered his violin and gave his life to protect Qilian Mu, the inspector who enforced the rules. The silent battlefield ghost Ruilanke and Wuyouming, the Barrier-Breaking Hammer, became sworn enemies over their bloody past, while Bailisi, a guardian who lives in the dark, wove a fragile thread of warmth between the brothers’ rift with her veil.

When the rules of an artificial god crush civilization, Qilian Mu resists the divine decree with his mortal body, only to suffer a backlash that gnaws at his bones and tears at his heart. Wei Hai, the deep-sea gambler, places his final bet: using his soul as bait to fish for the dead, he pays with his own annihilation to bring Merino and Lin Faluo back reborn. All that remains is a serpent’s gallbladder holding half a soul, buried in Qilian Mu’s crumbling world.
