“Child labor? No, I hire human weapons.”
When the cold-blooded merchant Lanvalde is betrayed by his guards and abandoned to die in a monster-infested forest, he meets a blonde girl who peels the hide off a giant bear as easily as tearing paper. She cannot speak or read, yet she can slay dragons and demons with a single knife. The town scorns her as a “monster,” but her eyes light up at the sight of a cup of warm honey milk.
“One gold coin a day. I’ll hire you as my bodyguard.”
The shrewd merchant has spotted a walking gold mine. He teaches her how to dress and read, beats up the people who bully her, and sells a three-gold-coin magic stone for a fortune. But one night, he wakes to find the girl curled up by his bed, clutching her coins, her sea-blue eyes reflecting absolute trust.
When wanted posters from a fallen kingdom cover the city walls, he finally learns that the “wild child” he picked up is none other than the legendary savior who slew gods with her icy eyes. When an enemy’s blade points at the girl’s throat, he draws the noble’s sword he has kept sheathed for ten years.
“You mess with my employee? Pay the breach-of-contract penalty first, with your life!”
Not bad, but in some paragraphs it is completely unclear who the subject is, and the names of you, me and him are a bit confusing.
A very good book. I look forward to the follow-up. The characters are also good.
