Prologue
I am always alone.
The metal armrests of my wheelchair are always cold, like the hollow place inside me that can never be filled. The wind stirred up by my classmates as they run past can ruffle my hair, but it can't blow away what's in my eyes. I know I'm different from them, not because I'm trying to stand out, but because I truly am. Whenever my emotions shift, the air around me begins to warp, and the gravitational field rises and falls like a breath. Pens roll off desks, and fine cracks suddenly appear in glass cups. I have to keep myself under control at all times, like walking a tightrope with an abyss below.
Until that afternoon.
I don't really remember exactly what happened. I only remember the shrill sound of brakes, followed by screams. When I came to, everything at home had changed. Everything was floating in midair. The most frightening thing was that I could feel the "hole" inside me waking up, ravenous and eager to destroy everything.
That was why they came looking for me.
"Come with us," said the man in the suit. His eyes were like the sea in winter. "There, you won't hurt anyone, and no one will hurt you."
They called it "Ai Rui An." A city suspended above an island, from a distance it looked like a delicate snowflake. There are many people here like me. There's the girl who is always humming, with tiny flames dancing at her fingertips. When the silent boy walks down the corridor, the raindrops outside the window stop in midair.
We are all anomalies, beings who have strayed from the normal path.
