The Great Tang's First Military Governor

The First Jiedushi of the Tang Dynasty, also known as Jiedushi of the Tang Dynasty, follows the birth and evolution of the Tang Dynasty’s jiedushi system. It focuses on the military and political structure that shaped the empire’s fortunes, tracing its rise from humble beginnings to its heyday and eventual loss of control, with particular attention to the fates of the first generation of jiedushi.

The story begins amid the collapse of the fubing system in the early Tang and growing crises along the frontier. It follows generals modeled on early jiedushi such as Wang Zhongsi, as they shoulder the task of unifying the frontier armies and repelling invasions by the Turks, Tibetans, Khitans, and other peoples during the reigns of Gaozong, Empress Wu, and Xuanzong. They are both the empire’s sharpest weapons in expanding its territory and the focus of power struggles between the central government and the frontier. A jiedushi commands military, financial, and administrative authority, making the post an efficient way to manage the complex situation on the borders while also sowing the seeds of a danger that would eventually grow too powerful to contain.

The novel portrays the loyalty and struggles of the first jiedushi in depth. They live by the creed of “defending the land and keeping the people safe,” giving their all in the bitterly cold frontier passes. Wang Zhongsi, for instance, urges Xuanzong not to rush into war and holds fast to the principle of “securing the borders, not waging war for its own sake.” Yet they cannot escape the vicious court factionalism: some are suspected of becoming too powerful, like Wang Zhongsi, who is demoted, while others struggle to balance imperial authority and local power. Through their eyes, the novel also shows how the jiedushi system changed from a powerful tool for defending the frontier into the prototype of the regional military governors’ fiefdoms, reflecting a pivotal turning point in the Tang dynasty’s decline. The “mighty jiedushi armies guarding the four corners” of Xuanzong’s Kaiyuan golden age give way to mounting undercurrents of runaway power during the Tianbao era, ultimately laying the groundwork for the An Lushan Rebellion.
