Set amid the social upheaval of the late Northern Song, Water Margin tells the story of Song Jiang and 107 other outlaws who, driven to rebellion by corrupt officials, gather at Liangshan Marsh and raise the banner of “Heaven’s Justice.” They later accept the imperial court’s amnesty and are sent to fight Fang La and others, only to end in scattered ruin. Centered on the theme of loyalty and righteousness, the novel exposes the corruption of feudal rule and portrays a memorable cast of heroes, including Lin Chong and Wu Song. It is one of China’s Four Great Classical Novels and a literary epic of ancient peasant uprisings.
