Phoenix Terrace: Who Will Be Empress Within the Palace Walls?

At sixteen, Su Yunqi entered the palace with her qin, seeking only a quiet, secure life. The daughter of a Vice Minister of Rites, she inherited her family’s literary refinement and aloof elegance, and was skilled at music and calligraphy, with a keen understanding of people. At first, Emperor Murong Yao saw her as a clever “idle piece” to use in his schemes for maintaining balance.

But the imperial palace was a battlefield. Lessons paid for in blood and tears forced her to grow claws. Her father’s neutral stance proved fragile, and a chess piece that failed to strengthen itself was doomed to be crushed.

Murong Yao was a talented yet suspicious ruler who saw his harem as a game of chess. Su Yunqi’s clear-eyed intelligence gradually caught his attention. Admiration gave way to affection, and probing turned into understanding. Together, they weathered one crisis after another, struggling to go from player and pawn to lovers and allies. She rose from a noble consort to become Empress.

Yet an emperor’s heart was impossible to fathom. After hardship came a beautiful new favorite. Murong Yao lost himself in her tenderness and neglected his young son. Watching the boy yearn for his father’s love, only to be disappointed time and again, Su Yunqi’s heart turned completely cold.

As her love crumbled, she finally understood: power was the only thing that would never betray her. The softness in her eyes vanished, and she transformed her talent and intelligence into razor-sharp political weapons. She would no longer be a pawn, nor would she hope for the emperor’s favor. She built her own network of influence, devoted herself to grooming her young son as heir, and cleared every obstacle in his path.

In the end, her son ascended the throne, and she ruled from behind the curtain. The girl who had once carried a qin had been tempered by years of turmoil into the true power behind the Great Yong dynasty. She wagered half her life and emerged the winner.
