In the early years of the Republic of China, Li Family Village stood by the Heilongjiang River, buried in snow and lashed by bitter winds. The farmer Li Fu and his family made their living growing crops and raising chickens. Recently, chicken thieves had repeatedly raided the coop, much to Li Fu's distress, so he laid a cunning trap. One night, he caught a white-faced weasel. Its face was as pale as paper, and its eyes gleamed with venomous resentment. Unaware of the consequences, Li Fu killed it.
Not long afterward, his eldest son, Li Gang, went to the mountain behind the village to gather firewood. The clear sky suddenly darkened, and fierce winds howled. A century-old tree crashed down onto Li Gang's legs, leaving him permanently disabled. His younger son, Li Yong, was driving a horse cart to sell goods in a neighboring town when the horse was startled and bolted wildly. Li Yong couldn't get out of the way in time. He was thrown from the cart, struck his head on a boulder, and died on the spot. Grief instantly engulfed Li Fu's family, while rumors spread through the village. Everyone said Li Fu had angered the Yellow Immortal and brought disaster upon them.
